What is Propolis?

Honeybees gather resins from plants and trees and process it, with wax and enzymes into propolis, a sticky substance which they use to help keep the hive or colony free from infection. The name propolis was first coined by Aristotle and comes from the Greek words Pro (meaning defender of) and Polis (meaning city), and so propolis literally means defender of the city. Due to its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, propolis acts as the bees’ immune defence mechanism. A great deal of research has shown that propolis is beneficial to humans too, as it supports our immune systems to deal with bacteria, viruses, fungal infections and also inflammation.
